• The Demijohn (Dame-Jeanne): These bulbous, narrow-necked glass vessels were utilized across Europe starting in the 1400s to ferment and transport wine, cognac, vinegar, or beer.
• The Iron Basket: The heavy-duty "cage-design" strap iron basket with riveted joints was engineered in the 19th and early 20th centuries to withstand rough shipping conditions. 
• Burlap/Straw Cushioning: Glass is inherently fragile, so the space between the vessel and the rigid iron wall was packed with straw, hay, or burlap sacks to absorb shock and prevent shattering. 
• The Plaque: The front features a distressed, enameled metal identification tag which traditionally designated the vineyard, estate, or regional merchant responsible for the liquid contents.
