Antique Oak File Cabinet, c. Early 20th Century
Dimensions are 42" Wide x 26.5" Deep x 59" High
This type of cabinet is a multi-drawer commercial document file, produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (circa 1890–1920). It marks a critical era during the Industrial Revolution when modern office organization systems were first being invented.
Function and Design
- Original Purpose: It was built to hold loose legal records, index files, or professional notes. Similar wide, shallow configurations (often called "flat files") housed oversized media like blueprints, architectural drawings, or topographical maps.
- Craftsmanship: The piece is constructed out of quarter-sawn American white oak (commonly called "Tiger Oak" due to its distinctive ray-like grain pattern). This dense hardwood was chosen for its extreme resistance to warping under the heavy weight of paper.
- Hardware: The drawers are fitted with cast brass or iron bin pulls that double as visual label frames. This allowed clerks to catalog files by project numbers, alphabetized records, or geographic coordinates.
- Modularity: Many multi-drawer systems from this period featured a "sectional" or "stacking" layout. They could be taken apart in blocks to make moving easier or expanded horizontally as a business grew.
